My Thoughts on 'The Help'

As many of you may have heard by now, The Help opens today in theaters. In celebration of this occasion, I wanted share my thoughts on the book by Kathryn Stockett.

In a nut shell, this novel tells the story of African American maids and the white families they serve in Jackson, Mississippi during the 60's. The story is told in the eyes of three main characters: Minny Jackson, the fire cracker of the group of maids whose mouth often gets her in trouble; Aibileen, a maid whom is older and wiser of the group; and Skeeter, the white aspiring journalist who has a heart for the maids. 

Skeeter takes on a project of writing an anonymous book on the specific events around the maids in their small town and creates quite the buzz. This story is beautifully written and full of memorable characters, outrageous scenarios, historical value and just plain fun. I found myself not wanting to put this book down as I read about the interesting and very different relationships between each of the families and their servants. In addition to a great story line, it appealed to all of my emotions. If adapted well, there is great potential in the film.

I have been waiting for the film since I saw the first trailer back in May. If you decide to see the film and have not read the book, I encourage you to take the time and read it as well. You won't be disappointed.

Quick Quiche Breakfast Recipe

Here's a recipe for a fast breakfast dish I would like to share. With only minutes of preparation and 30-45 minutes in the oven, this is a tasty and quick way to start your morning.

Ingredients:
-2 pieces of bread
-4 eggs
-Sausage or bacon
-And or veggies
-Cheese

First off, the ingredients are just a suggestion and starting point. Feel free to add veggies to make a healthy version or just adding whatever you have left in your fridge. With that said, feel free to add more or less of anything to shape to your liking.

Directions:
1. Start by fully cooking any meat and veggies you plan on including
2. Spray the dish you intend on using with non-stick spray (glass casserole dish or any other dish)
3. Tear the bread slices into little pieces and line the bottom of your dish
4. Top the bread layer with your meat and any cooked veggies you wish to add
5. Whisk your eggs together in a separate bowl and add salt and pepper for flavor, pour egg mixture over dish
6. Finish by topping with shredded cheese

Cover and cook in the oven for about 30 minutes or until eggs are done. Let sit a few minutes, uncover, and enjoy! In the picture below, I included mushrooms.

Where Have our Manners Gone?

I have lived many places and come across many different people yet I have never seen the lack of manners that I have experienced lately. I'm not sure if it's the region or city I'm in, but it really is upsetting. No one says bless you when you cough, excuse me when they bump you, or really holds the door for a woman anymore. Is it because we are a less social people with all our technology? Or is it perhaps that parents now days just aren't instilling the same values as parents used to?

I don't know what the cause is, but it's scary to know my future children will come up in this society. All I can do is rear my children the best I can and teach them what my parents taught me. I can't account for the rest of the world but I can just do my part.

I challenge you this week... Everyday do one selfless thing for another person. Whether it's letting someone in front of you in traffic, or offering to help someone that's carrying a full load. It will at least make you feel good knowing that however small, you did something positive in a stranger's life. And you never know the impact if could have in that person's life that day.

Good Buy or Good Bye: Nail Polish

I found the most amazing nail polish color at Walgreens. I'm normally into soft or light, bright colors but this electric blue color is really eye catching and very smooth. It came in a pack with a clear top coat. Believe it or not, it only set me back $1.99!!
I'm normally weary of wet n wild but I would recommend this color. The top coat is a little too watery for my liking but at $1.99 this is still a steal. Go pick one up for yourself! They also have other colors that come in the two-pack. Definately a Good Buy!

Beauty Goodies!

Thanks to my friend over at Make-up/Music/Money/Me. I won her beauty giveaway. Take a look at all the goodies I received!! The Optimum Care moisturizing cream is my fav! For those with ethnic hair, it's a great product. The smell reminds me of a coconut infused tropical scent. Not only is the smell amazing, but it really lays the hair down and doesn't leave that greasy feeling. Only downside to it is that I can't find the product anywhere! I visited two Sally's stores and no luck. I'm sure it has a lot to do with the fact that El Paso doesn't have a lot of ethnic hair. Online shopping here I come!
